Preliminary Examination Syllabus
The Preliminary Exam is a screening test and consists of one paper, General Studies, for 150 marks. The syllabus for the Preliminary exam includes:

- Current events: national and international importance.
- History of India and Bihar: an emphasis on the history of Bihar.
- Geography: the geographical division of Bihar and its major river systems; India’s physical and economic geography.
- Indian Polity and Economy: the country’s political system, Panchayati Raj, community development, and the economy in Bihar and India.
- Indian National Movement and the Role of Bihar: aspects include the nature and character of the nineteenth-century resurgence, the growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence.
- General Mental Ability: logical reasoning and analytical ability.
Mains Examination Syllabus
Candidates who qualify in the Preliminary exam proceed to the Mains examination, which includes:
- General Hindi (qualifying only): Essay writing, Grammar, Syntax, Summarization.
- General Studies Paper-I:
- Modern History of India and Indian culture.
- Current events of national and international importance.
- Statistical Analysis, graphs, and diagrams.
- General Studies Paper-II:
- Indian Polity, Indian economy and Geography of India, and the role and impact on the Bihar economy.
- The role and impact of science and technology in the development of India.

Interview
Candidates who clear the Mains examination are called for the final stage, which is the Interview. It is intended to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service.
